How to Pack for Umrah: The Complete Checklist for Sisters
Share
Packing for Umrah is different from packing for any other trip. You will be walking for hours, praying in crowded spaces, moving between very hot outdoors and very cold air-conditioned buildings, and you want to feel comfortable enough to focus on your worship, not on your clothes or your feet.
This is the checklist we wish every sister had before her first Umrah. It covers what to wear, what to carry and what to leave at home, with a few of our own travel essentials along the way.
1. Your Umrah clothing
This is where most sisters feel the biggest difference between a smooth trip and a tiring one.
Abayas. Choose loose, breathable abayas in a lightweight fabric such as crepe or cotton. Avoid thick or synthetic fabrics that trap heat. Pack 3 to 4, so you always have a clean one while another is being washed and dried. A zip-front or one-piece design saves time when you are getting ready for prayer.
- Hayaa Abaya & Hijab: a flared, flowing cut in lightweight premium crepe that keeps you cool and holds its drape. The full front zip makes it quick to put on, zipped hidden pockets keep your phone and keys safe, and cotton cuffs make wudu easier. Choose it if you want a well-made abaya you will also wear after the trip.
- Khayal Abaya & Hijab: a one-piece abaya in a lightweight cotton blend, so there is no layering. It has a hidden chest pocket for your phone, passport or cash, wudu-friendly sleeves, and a soft white cotton jersey hijab included. Choose it if you want the simplest wear-and-go option.
- Yusr Cotton Travel Set: a 100% cotton abaya with matching trousers. It has a zip pocket, a faux pocket that gives access to your trouser pockets, elastic cuffs for wudu, and trousers with a front zip pocket and adjustable length. Choose it if you want a complete outfit sorted in one set.
Under-abaya trousers or shorts. Skip the leggings, as they trap heat. Cotton or linen trousers are airy and modest. If you tend to get thigh rub from long walks, anti-chafe shorts underneath make a big difference.
Light-coloured abayas. If you choose a cream or light abaya, it can be see-through in strong light, so wear a beige or skin-tone layer underneath.
Hijabs and under-caps. Pack several, and choose soft, breathable fabrics. An adjustable under-hijab bonnet with no tight band stays comfortable through long days.
2. Socks and footwear
You will walk a lot, often on smooth marble that gets slippery and on pavements that get very hot.
- Bring comfortable, broken-in shoes or sandals. Do not wear new shoes for the first time on Umrah.
- Pack anti-slip socks that are breathable and not too tight. They help with grip during Tawaf and on long days on your feet. Anti-Slip Socks for Umrah & Hajj
- A small shoe bag keeps your shoes with you at the mosque, so you are not hunting for them afterwards.
3. The right bag
A large handbag is tiring over a full day. A light drawstring bag or small backpack is easier on your shoulders and holds your water bottle, snacks, a small pack of tissues and your shoes.
Keep a small zipped pouch inside for your phone, room key and a little cash.
4. Sun and heat protection
The sun in Makkah and Madinah can be intense, even outside the peak summer months.
- Sun hat or visor to shade your face and head. Foldable Sun Hat for Umrah & Hajj
- UV sunglasses to protect your eyes from glare and squinting.
- Fragrance-free SPF, since scented products are avoided while in ihram.
- A compact umbrella, ideally with a reflective outer layer, for walking outdoors.
- A small handheld or neck fan if you travel in warmer months.
5. Toiletries (all fragrance-free)
While you are in the state of ihram, scented products are not used, so pack fragrance-free versions of everything.
- Unscented soap, shampoo, deodorant and body lotion
- Fragrance-free sunscreen
- Lip balm and a gentle moisturiser, as the air conditioning is very drying
- Toothbrush, toothpaste and floss
- Sanitary products and a few spare pairs of underwear
- A small travel pack of wet wipes and hand sanitiser
If you have dry skin or eczema, bring your usual emollient or fragrance-free petroleum jelly. Cooled aloe gel can also feel soothing after a hot day.
6. Health and comfort
- Personal medication in its original packaging, plus a copy of any prescription
- Pain relief and plasters for blisters and sore feet
- Oral rehydration salts to replace what you lose when you sweat. Speak to your doctor first.
- Reusable water bottle and a few snacks such as dates and nuts
- A small spray bottle to cool yourself down on hot days
7. Documents and money
Keep these together in one place that is easy to reach.
- Passport and visa
- Flight and hotel confirmations (printed copies and on your phone)
- Travel insurance details
- Emergency contacts written on paper
- Some cash in small notes, plus a bank card
Take photos of your key documents and save them to your phone or email.
8. Tech and small extras
- Phone charger and a power bank
- UK to Saudi plug adaptor
- A small prayer mat and a pocket dua or Quran
- Scarf or shawl for cold air-conditioned areas
- A small sewing kit and safety pins
- A lightweight lock for your suitcase
What to leave at home
- Scented products of any kind
- Heavy, thick or synthetic clothing
- Too many shoes or "just in case" outfits
- Valuable jewellery
Pack less than you think you need. You can always buy small things there, and a lighter suitcase makes the whole trip easier.
